Eloise at Nine Months

Nine months.  She's officially been on the outside longer than the inside (And just for the record; I much prefer her on the outside!).   This precious girl is keeping up with her big sister and delighting us all with her growing personality.  She's definitely 100% mobile now.... not just rolling, but scooching (spellcheck tells me this is not a word) where she wants to go with her own adorable army crawl.  I'm not sure that she'll ever really learn to crawl on all fours with her belly off the ground, but her own sweet little method isn't slowing her down.  As you can tell from these photos, it's getting really hard to photograph her with her little sign... she's on the go!

Her big happy grin lights up her whole face and reveals THREE teeth now.  The bottom right one came in on February 21, a day after she hit the nine month mark. We can tell that she's working on all four top ones too.

Those three teeth are eating everything in sight.  No purees, of course, but this girl will put away whatever meal the grownups are eating.  Spaghetti, chicken pie, soups, casseroles, pizza, fruits and veggies and MEAT.  I know she eats a better variety than her sister... some meals she eats more quantity too!

See that drool from her tooth poking through?  That photo shoot didn't last too long.  Let's try again a couple days later here....

She is alert and curious, always taking in everything around her.  I sure wish I knew what was going on in her little brain because you can certainly see the wheels are always turning.  She loves rhymes and bouncing (Ride a horsey, ride a horsey is a bit hit right now)

She is babbling up a storm.  We haven't a clue what she's saying, but she never stops saying it.  The little sounds she makes are hilarious.  She will wave bye-bye and clap her hands and do the sign for "all done" (still working on the others).  She blows raspberries and makes clicking sounds with her tongue.  She laughs at Clara and looks at her with a love and adoration that neither photos or words could come close to capturing.

She takes two great naps consistently (about an hour and a half each!), although she really prefers that those happen in her crib now.... not quite as good at napping on the go as she was when she was teeny.  Her nighttime sleep is also.... improving.... overall.  Although I'm afraid to type that out for fear I'll jinx it.  We've had some good stretches lately.  Perhaps she'll soon be sleeping as well at night as she does during the day.

She loves her bouncer and rides happily in the stroller.  Bathtime remains her favorite part of the day and she kicks and splashes up a storm.  Most nights she gets a bath with Clara now and they both love playing together in the water.  She'll stand supported if we put here there, though she isn't quite pulling up on her own yet.  She does, however, pull hair.  Mama has a constant ponytail and Daddy has had some painful chest hair encounters.

She might love Mama best, but she's still happy and willing to be passed around to just about anyone, and she is certainly passed around a lot.  On Sundays she comes back to me smelling like a mixture of a dozen people's perfumes.  She loves to be held, by whoever is willing to do it.  At her nine month checkup, she tipped the scales at 20 pounds and a little change, so whoever is holding her better have a strong back!  Those rolls aren't light.  We've endured a couple of nursing strikes and she's still hanging in with me.  I don't know that she'll nurse quite as long as Clara did, but since she's likely my last I'll be trying to go as long as she's interested.  I love our quiet snuggle times, even if it's just a few times a day now.

Eloise, you are my little sidekick and I love you more than you could ever imagine.  Nine months looks good on you, sweet baby.

15 Months

I took the photos on time and am only two almost three weeks late finally writing about it and getting them up.  Time is flying and I am trying desperately to soak up every minute, aware that as quickly as it passes, it will never return.  I'm not sure I've ever been so intentional about living in the present in my whole life.  Every day with Clara is truly pure joy and every night I go to bed satisfied and happy and looking forward to the next day with her.  I'm not sure there's ever been another time in my life when I have felt so content with my daily work.

So, let's see what has happened in the past three months since I did one of these updates.  Clara is not just walking anymore, she's running and climbing.... everywhere.  She reminds me a bit more of a boy than a girl in this way.  She's active, she's busy, she's curious.  She's an explorer and a problem solver.  She has no fear (as shown in those beach videos where she went crashing into the waves!).  She is brave.  Which we knew.  But it's fun to watch her show that bravery in new and less life-and-death ways than a year ago this time.  It's not just gross motor that has changed; she's doing lots with her little hands these days too.  She loves taking lids off and putting them back on, turning knobs, building simple towers, and is beginning to attempt puzzles.  She's shown interest in some self-feeding with a spoon too, except for the whole actually eating it part.

Her communication has changed a lot this past quarter!  She still does some baby sign language, and has added a few to her repertoire (please, all done, more, milk, eat), but they are already starting to fade in favor of words.  She babbles constantly, although I couldn't tell you most of what she's saying.  We love to hear her little voice going a mile a minute: "abbeeabbeeabbeeaaaaaddeeeeaaaaadeeeaaddeeeeeeee"  She is learning new words every day and can already say: dada, mama, doggy, ball, hairbow, hi, bubbles, keys, clock, flag, brown bear, night night, bye bye, go, Big Daddy, shoe, up, down, EIEIO, uh oh, amen, all done,  .... and lots of animal sounds.  One of our favorite things is when we say, "What does Clara say?"  and she says "I love you" which  sounds more like "I luuuuuuuu."  Of course, her receptive vocabulary is even stronger.  She has several other "tricks" too, like "What does a doctor say?" to which she shakes her head and finger as if to say, "no more monkeys jumping on the bed!" or "Smell the flowers" where she wrinkles her nose and breathes in.  She is able to follow lots of simple commands now like "go get the _____," "sit down," "kick your legs!" or "Come here!"  She can point to several body parts.  I'll try to capture some of that on video soon.

She's starting to pretend a little bit.  She spends lots of time in her play kitchen stirring things and playing with plastic food.  She will give a baby doll or stuffed animal a bottle or bite of food.  She loves loves talking on the phone (or remote control, or whatever else she can find that might pass for a phone) and brushing her hair.  She likes to mimic people.  She loves fingerplays like "itsy bitsy spider," "this little piggy" and "five little monkeys jumping on the bed."  She loves to listen to us sing and she still of course loves books (when she's in the mood to sit long enough to finish one)!  She likes to play with a ball, watch us blow bubbles, and ride on her toy car.  She is starting to sort shapes and loves stacking and unstacking rings and pressing buttons.  She will dance to music.  She loves to be outside.  She loves the water.

She is social. Clara loves people. All people.  Her people.  Strangers.  Children.  Oh, especially children just a little older than her.  I'd say her two favorite demographics are men over 60 and boys between ages 5-8.  She knows how to flirt, too.  Puts her hands behind her back and leans forward slightly while sticking out her chin and grinning as big as she can, as if to say, "Aren't I cute?!"  She waves at people and blows kisses.  No real signs of separation anxiety around here.  Restaurants are among her favorite places to visit... she just loves to walk from table to table and see whose love and affection she can earn.  The answer?  Almost everyone's.

I know I'm biased.  Wildly biased, in fact.  But there's something about Clara, y'all.  She captures people's hearts in a way that leaves me wondering and shaking my head every time.  Constantly, total strangers who know nothing about her history or her story will come up to us and start talking to her and delighting in her.  Now I know that everybody loves all babies.  But I promise you, this is different.  She has this twinkle, this sparkle, and it captivates people.  Sometimes we'll start talking to them and tell a bit of her story and will realize that these people needed one of those sparkles from Clara for some reason in particular.  People who have lost a child or grandchild or are in the midst of a personal battle of their own.  She continues to inspire and to spread joy.  A couple months ago we were eating lunch at QDoba and an elderly lady kept smiling and waving at Clara.  When she left the restaurant she came up to us with tears in her eyes and said, "You don't know how much she touched me today.  Thank you.  Thank you for sharing her with me."  I don't know why she needed Clara.  I don't know her story.  But I know that Clara has a special something about her.  She is sunshine.

In terms of her eating we have made a small bit of progress, I suppose.  Although in other ways it feels like we've stepped back a little too.  She's finished with a bottle and dreamfeeds (please cue the Hallelujah chorus) and I also stopped pumping after 13 months of marital bliss resigned tolerance with my rhythmic little friend in the black bag.  (Those of you who have exclusively pumped, or pumped at all, know my delight over this!)  She's still nursing a couple times a day in addition to drinking 12-18 ounces of regular whole cow's milk from a straw cup.  She's a bit pickier now than she was a few months ago, but still eats a decent variety of table food, just not very much of anything.  She resists a spoon adamantly so most of her food is "pick up" stuff.  She can self-feed, but usually after just a few bites she quits, so I am still "driving" most of her eating, so to speak.  It requires lots of distraction (toys, songs, other people, or.... I'm embarrassed to admit.... Sesame Street) to sneak food in her mouth and hope it stays in there and gets swallowed instead of spit out.  She's so busy and active that time strapped in a high chair is simply not her favorite (and that's probably an understatement).  So, when possible she eats in the stroller, in a grocery cart, at the coffee table, or in a restaurant - which is full of new people and distractions.  I still get frustrated with feeding her and feeling like it's an enormous amount of effort for sometimes very very little results.  We offer as many high calorie foods as possible and do things like cover veggies in tons of butter.  Despite all those efforts, she only gained eleven ounces between her 12 month and 15 month checkups and dropped from the 25th percentile to the 12th.  We're not tremendously worried (although I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a little concerned about it) and are continuing our efforts to help her keep gaining.  I'm trying desperately to avoid a PediaSure regimen which would feel like a big step back to me. We'll check back at 18 months.  I will be glad when eating is not such a big focus of our days or source of worry and concern for me, the primary feeding lady.

I tried weaning her prevacid soon after her first birthday.  After about a month of horrific napping it dawned on me that perhaps reflux was the culprit.  Sure enough, as soon as I resumed it, my good little sleeper was back.  So she still does have some reflux and I'll happily keep giving her that med as long as she needs it.  She naps twice a day for 1-2 hours each time and still sleeps about eleven hours at night. (8PM-7AM).  We've just started putting her down at night while she's still awake and letting her put herself to sleep.  She's done a great job with that and we'll eventually move that direction for naps too.  But for now, I am still enjoying nursing and snuggling.  Maybe when she goes to one nap we'll work on that.  I've yet to hear of any mother complain by saying, "I sure wish I hadn't rocked them as  much when they were little."

Okay!  If you've actually made it this far without skipping to the photos, I'm impressed.  I took these on her 15 month birthday, but my camera battery was dead in the morning when the lighting is better and when we tried again at lunchtime it was hot and the sun was overhead, so they aren't just stunning.  But you just wait for the Fourth of July pictures coming next.  There are some precious ones in that batch.

Happy 15 month birthday, Clara!  You're the light of our lives and the joy of our every day.  I'm so thankful God decided you needed to be here and blessed to have the honor and privilege of spending my days with you.  Your joy is abundant and it makes mine abundant too.  Thanks be to God.

Eleven Months Old

Today I had to start a new photo folder called "Month Twelve."  How is it possible that we're already just a month away from Clara's first birthday?  Our little baby girl is quickly become a small toddler.  Here is some of what she's been up to this month:

She's not yet walking, but will take one or two little steps on her own before realizing it and collapsing to her bottom.  We've been working on building her core strength and tummy muscles with "baby planks" as that is the last area the PT has any concern about before we get dismissed from their care.  She's a speedy crawler these days and we've even caught her climbing the stairs successfully (time to install more baby gates).  She loves to dance and be on her feet and cruises all around our living room and kitchen.  She does lots of little baby "squats" and will get from a standing to a stooped position or to her knees.  She loves walking behind a toy or if you hold on to her fingers for her.

Her eating continues to improve as well!!  We have off days, as I'm sure all little people do, but for the most part she is eating regular old table food now.  She still doesn't love the spoon, but will humor us with a few bites at each meal, usually.  We give her tastes of just about whatever we're eating, but her standby favorites are: eggs (yes, I know you're not supposed to until after a year, but she's fine.), cottage cheese, avocado, deli turkey, beans, shredded cheese, tortillas, bananas, pears, cheerios, sweet potatoes, goldfish crackers, grits, and mac and cheese. (I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but there are the highlights.)  Oh, her very favorite thing to eat of late: DOG FOOD.  Gross, Clara.  We've been working really hard this month on getting Clara to drink more from a cup.  She loves to drink out of a straw, but usually only drinks 3-4 ounces all day that way.  We need to increase that so that we can stop giving her bottles while she sleeps.  I'm ready to be done with that nonsense.

Clara is really into mimicking now.  She'll copy us when we blow raspberries or make a funny sound by running our fingers across our lips or return a friendly tongue stick out.  She has learned the baby sign for "all done" and we're working on some others.  She babbles and makes lots of different sounds, but the only "word" that seems discernible is "dada."  Here's the conversation Clara and I have constantly:

Me: Clara, can you say "Mama"?
Clara: Dada
Me: Dada is at work.  Can you say Mama?
Clara: Dada.
Me: Mama Mama Mama Mama
Clara: (looking at the door): Dada? Dada? Dada?

She loves playing peek a boo and will often hide behind curtains or furniture and pop out with a big grin on her face.  She laughs a lot, especially at daddy and has become very ticklish lately.  She loves playing in the bathtub and splashing around and loves her puppy Rufus.  She loves being outside (we've enjoyed some glorious February weather!) and her face lights up for people - strangers and loved ones alike.  She loves eating out at restaurants and having the opportunity to flirt with folks, especially elderly people.  It's clear she's a social bug and will enjoy some freedom when cold and flu season is over.  She still loves reading and turning the pages by herself and it makes my heart soar to look over and see that she has chosen to crawl over to the book basket, choose a book and "read" it all on her own.  She loves to play with her baby doll and give it a bottle (ironic, since she still won't take one awake herself!) and push the stroller.  She also loves to walk behind her "mail cart" that Aunt Liz and Uncle Hugh gave her for Christmas.  She loves to ride up high on Daddy's shoulders and loves to snuggle her lovies with Mama in the rocking chair.  She will play with her toys, but is mostly interested in opening and closing doors, playing with the handles and knobs on drawers and dressers and pulling pots and pans out of the cabinets.  Oh, and trying to get Rufus to come get his toys from her.  Precious.

We've dropped down to two naps which has actually been a great relief to our daily schedule.  She sleeps twelve hours at night now and usually about an hour and a half for each nap.  We're still feeding a lot, but I expect we'll find at her next weigh in (next week) that she's gaining very well.

No more teeth yet, but she always has her hands in her mouth (or whatever she can find on the floor to stick in there) and is drooling buckets.  I'm sure she's working on some more and it's just a matter of time before they will pop through.  In the meantime though, those two bottom teeth are about as cute as it gets.

She's the light of our lives and the source of unspeakable joy.  Even on days when I am beyond exhausted, when the laundry is overwhelming and the house is a wreck (well, that's most days), I am thankful beyond measure for her life and the privilege it is to be her mother.  We're making plans for a big first birthday bash to celebrate God's mercies and goodness.  Details coming soon.....

"All Done"

And after every meal (well, let's be honest - sometimes about two bites into a meal) Clara does the only "baby sign" that she's learned with any consistency now.  "All Done!"  We think it's pretty cute.

This video is from a couple of days ago....

Mac and Cheese

Clara may look 100% like her daddy, but her taste in foods is like her mama.  She had her first mac and cheese tonight and boy, did she like it.  Carbs, check . Cheese, check.  Yep, just like mama likes it.  I wish I had the video going at the beginning.  She was shoving them into her little mouth as fast as she possibly could and grabbing for them desperately.  I'm glad you like it, Clara.  And yes, I'll gladly finish off the rest of that box for you.

10 Months Old

Clara baby is ten months old!  She was ten months old on Monday, but this mama hasn’t had a free second to blog about it because let me tell you a little something about ten month old Clara:  SHE NEVER STOPS MOVING.  So much has happened in the past month, I can’t even believe it.  She had a huge gross motor surge the week after Christmas which I wrote about here.  She’s a master crawler now and will get anywhere she wants to go.  But her favorite thing to do is pull up and stand and cruise along the furniture.  I’m pretty sure that I’ll be reporting by eleven months that we’ve got a walker.  She’s got incredible control with her body… she will pull up to standing, sit down controlled, crawl, reach out for something while just barely holding on to something with a finger or two and take a few steps (while holding on) and even let go and stand all on her own (the longest we’ve counted is 15 seconds).  She. Is. So. Busy.  She seems to know about technology and cords and shoes… those are always the things she’s crawling after these days.  Oh, and Rufus. Poor Rufus.

Her eating has taken off this month, too.  In fact, I think it’s safe to say that Clara learned how to eat this month.  Now, that doesn’t mean every meal goes beautifully or that we’re getting a ton in her, but by golly, she’s doing it.  For several weeks she was really eating baby cereal very well.  That was great because I was getting about four ounces of breast milk a day in her through the cereal and we stopped (FINALLY) giving her two feedings during the night while she slept. Plus, I could give her all this frozen milk that was just sitting in the freezer doing nothing since she refused to drink it in her bottles, freeing me up to pump a little less.  Then, Clara figured out how to self-feed puffs. Which was also awesome!  But since she’s figured out how to finger feed, that’s all she wants to do.  Spoon feeding has gotten to be quite the challenge again!  She can do it, but she doesn’t want to. (See some personality shining through?  We are going to have our hands FULL with this toddler!)  However, these are fairly typical behaviors for a ten month old…

So typical in fact that when the folks from the infant-toddler program came out and re-assessed Clara on Tuesday morning, they re-assessed Clara for physical, adaptive, cognitive, social, and communication skills.  And Clara was at the ten month level in every area.  No developmental delays.  We had hoped and prayed that we’d be mostly “caught up” by the time she turned one, but this is an incredible accomplishment for our sweet girl.  We’re so proud of her and her hard work, and so deeply thankful to our God of grace and mercy who has blessed us more abundantly than we deserve.  He continually uses Clara to remind us of the power of many prayers.  May He always receive the glory for Clara.

Our only real remaining issue for Clara is the feeding (and continued vigilance with germs, of course).  Even though she’s doing so much better with her solids, she’s still only taking a bottle while asleep.  We are working hard on getting her to use a sippy cup and an open cup so that she can learn to drink while she’s awake.  Right now, her daily schedule looks something like this…

7:30 – Wake up, get a clean diaper, go flirt with Daddy in bed.
8:00 – Eat cereal (with prevacid, yumm)
8:15 – Play on the floor while Mama pumps. See how much trouble she can get into while I’m tethered.
9:00 – Morning nap and 1st bottle (in that order.  I rock her to sleep, then she drinks her bottle).  Once the bottle is in her, Mama considers showering (usually doesn’t), folds laundry, reads emails, and scrubs hardened oatmeal off the kitchen floor.
10:30 – Wake up and play!  Chase Rufus. Gnaw on coasters.
11:30 – More solids, cereal and finger food.
12:00 – Chase Rufus.  Play peek-a-boo.  Read books.
1:00 – Afternoon nap and 2nd bottle (again, in that order).  Mama frantically eats lunch, pumps, washes bottles, preps dinner.
2:30 – Wake up.  Sometimes go with Mama and Rufus while they jog at the park.  Or maybe indulge Mama in one of her ridiculous photo shoots.  Chase Rufus.
4:00 – Time for more solids!  Another bowl of cereal.  Some more finger foods. A big fat mess. (Don’t worry, Rufus helps clean it up)
5:00 – Third nap.  Mama’s favorite part of the day.  3rd bottle too, if she’ll sleep.  On the days she won’t sleep, I just nurse her.  Thankfully, she’ll do that while awake.
6:00 – Try to distract Mama from cooking dinner.
6:30 – More solids (just finger food this time) while Mama and Daddy eat.
7:00 - Bath, lotions, jammies, snuggles, more stories.
7:30 – Nursing and bed.

So for those playing along at home, that was EIGHT feedings (four solids, four milks) in 12 hours.  I feel like it’s all we do!  But it’s getting more and more fun as she’s learning how to eat a variety of foods. Here are some things we’ve tried the past few weeks (with her favorite ones marked with a *)

*avocado
*banana
yogurt
black beans
hummus
green beans
cottage cheese
*shredded cheese
peas
sweet potato
*pear
carrots (those made her throw up)
pudding
prunes
*puffs
baby oatmeal, barley, mixed grain cereals
and lots of those squeezy pouches with fruit and veggie combos

So, what else is Clara up to at ten months?  She’s becoming a great problem solver.  She will find a toy if you take it away from her and is constantly figuring out how to get around my living room barricades, meant to contain her.  She smiles big for everyone and doesn’t show any signs of stranger anxiety yet (not that we see many strangers with this house arrest, but….) She claps!  She waves!  We’ve been working on baby sign language some, but so far the only one she’s caught on to is “all done.”  Of course.  From the very first bite, she’s busy signing “all done,” “all done!”   She sleeps eleven to twelve hours through the night very consistently and we are all loving not disturbing her slumber with feeds.  She wakes up happy and will hang out in her crib by herself for a long time if you let her.  She doesn’t like being contained in the exersaucer or bouncer seat or even in the pack n play much anymore.  Too much exploring to do.   She loves to read and when you put a book down will turn and reach for another.  She’s great at turning the pages and loves to feel the textures of touch and feel books.  She loves to play with her big cube and her musical table that she got for Christmas… they both allow her to stand and cruise and also learn lots about cause and effect.  She likes peek-a-boo and patty cake and five little monkeys jumping on the bed, and ride a horsey.  She still loves listening to singing and rhymes and chants.  She loves bouncing on her daddy’s shoulders and getting raspberries blown on her tummy.  She likes wallowing on the floor with her granddaddies.  She likes funny faces and silly sounds. She laughs and smiles and is so so happy, almost all the time.  And she got two teeth this month.

I’d say it’s been a pretty good month for Clara!  Here she is on her ten month birthday (which we celebrated in Elberton with Mama K and Daddy Bob!)

Have you ever seen such a cute ruffle-butt?

Here's my trick!  Standing with no hands!

I love everything about this scrunched up nose, smiling face.
